Meet Dr Stephen McCarthy (Chiropractor)
I was in constant pain. My lower back had been achy for a few years on and off and then one day it completely locked up. I couldn’t move. All I had done was sit down on a low step and when I tried to stand up I felt a sudden pain right across my lower back. I literally couldn’t straighten up. Somehow I managed to get myself home and it did ease a bit over the following few days but it didn’t go away. For several months, I couldn’t find a solution.
The GP prescribed pain killers which didn’t seem to help much. The pain was constant and there just didn’t seem to be a solution. I was unable to train as I would like at the gym, and having to be on my feet all day at work was agony. At this point I believed it was something I was just going to have to live with.
Trying Out Chiropractic
At this time I was living and working in Australia and a friend suggested I try chiropractic. At this time I’d never even heard of chiropractic but when he described how effective it had been for him I decided to give it a try. The results were incredible and after a few chiropractic treatment sessions I was virtually pain free. It was amazing to see almost instant results. As it worked so fantastically well for me I wondered why chiropractic was so effective when the medical world didn’t seem to have any answers. It was my dad who suggested I consider training to become a chiropractor, and I realised it was a great idea.

Chiropractic Studies
I began reading and finding out everything I could about chiropractic and eventually enrolled on a five year full-time study course in Oxfordshire and graduated in 2009 with a BSc (Hons) in Chiropractic. While at university I learned about chiropractic’s natural approach, working with the body instead of against it. I gained valuable clinical experience working in a busy chiropractic clinic prior to establishing Active Chiropractic here in Totton.
Living a Healthy Lifestyle
I have always been extremely interested in anything relating to health, sports and nutrition. I endeavour to train 3 or 4 times a week at the gym using a combination of cardio and resistance training, and am currently exploring the benefits of HIIT (high-intensity interval training). If you’re seeking a healthier life or the ability to return to doing the things you love, give us a call today.
